How to choose the right toothpaste?

Toothpaste is an essential oral hygiene product at every stage of life. But it’s not easy to choose the right toothpaste that addresses your needs.

Fluoride and fluoride-free toothpaste, whitening toothpaste, or toothpaste for sensitive teeth, cavity protection, gingivitis, plaque, tartar, whitening and breath-freshening … We’ve got some tips to help you make better-informed toothpaste decisions.

Role of toothpaste

Combined with the mechanical and hydrodynamic action of your manual or electric toothbrush, a suitable toothpaste helps remove food residue and plaque from your tooth surfaces, interdental spaces, and gums, and provides good care for your oral cavity.

How much?

You don't need a lot of toothpaste for it to be effective. We recommend applying a pea-sized amount to your toothbrush. The most important thing is to adopt a good brushing technique.

Rinse after brushing?

Well, there is no clear consensus on whether you should rinse your mouth after brushing or not. If you’re prone to tooth decay, skipping rinsing allows the toothpaste’s ingredients to fully absorb into your teeth and gums. If you rinse, on the other hand, you flush away plaque or food debris dislodged during brushing, interdental cleaning, and flossing and you minimise the amount of fluoride that might be ingested. As you see, both practices have their merits. Ultimately, whether you rinse your mouth after brushing depends on your personal needs and oral health.

More tips for choosing toothpaste

To preserve your tooth enamel, choose a toothpaste that is not too abrasive. In fact, some toothpastes contain harsh polishing and whitening agents that can damage the precious enamel. It's best to use an enzymatic toothpaste with a low RDA if you opt for a natural whitening effect. Also, choose a toothpaste with a pleasant taste—have you tried Be you yet? Great flavours will undoubtedly encourage you to brush your teeth regularly and thoroughly.

Strong foaming means better cleaning. Nope.

It’s time to break the biggest myth about your toothpaste: it doesn’t need to foam. In fact, less foam there is, the better.

We have been conditioned to believe that cleaning products don’t clean unless they produce a lot of foam. The foam makes you think it's covering every nook and hard-to-reach place in your mouth, so you think it's doing a top-notch job. Advertisements play into it too, showing us that a good toothpaste has to foam up. Have you ever wondered what causes it to foam?

SLS

The reason is a common ingredient known as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)—a surfactant. It lowers the surface tension between liquids and solids. This makes it an effective detergent, emulsifier, and foaming agent. So, SLS creates the bubbly texture you may associate with an effective tooth-cleaning experience.

Is SLS really necessary and does it clean better?

No. People love foamy toothpaste because it gives this feeling of super cleaning. But SLS is probably not the best for oral care: it has been associated with discomfort during and after brushing, increased sensitivity, potential irritations and dryness in the mouth, ulcers or canker sores, taste disruptions, and allergic reactions.

Here's the catch

The real deal is finding a toothpaste that not only cleans but also genuinely takes care of your oral health. Congrats, you found Curaprox. All our toothpastes are guaranteed free of SLS and other harsh or questionable ingredients. Thanks to SLS-free toothpaste options such as our Be you, Enzycal, or Black is white and our kids' toothpastes, you now have a gentle yet effective way to keep teeth clean and gums healthy. Curaprox toothpastes are here to stay, providing a fresh and clean oral care experience.

Complete your gentle brushing experience

We have the ultimate gentle dream team for a kind and effective oral care routine.

Your brushing experience should ideally involve a dense, soft-bristled toothbrush—preferably a Curaprox brush such as the CS 5460 ultra soft—plus a low-abrasive toothpaste without SLS and other unwanted ingredients. Good to know: In addition to fluoride, all our toothpastes contain enamel-strengthening enzymes that are also found in saliva, offering a particularly natural and gentle approach. They are guaranteed SLS-free and contain no harmful ingredients such as microplastics or triclosan.
